Two quotes can both say ‘full detail’ and describe completely different afternoons. That is why the price for something that sounds identical swings by hundreds of dollars. This is what ours covers, so a comparison is a fair one.

Exterior. Foam and rinse first, to float grit off the panel rather than drag it across. A two-bucket contact wash with clean mitts. After that comes the part most washes skip: iron and tar removers to dissolve what is bonded into the clear coat, and clay to lift what the chemicals leave. Run your hand over a washed bonnet and feel the grit; that is what this stage removes.

Wheels and arches. The full face, the barrel behind it and the arch liner, cleaned with equipment kept for wheels only so brake dust never ends up in the paint wash.

Interior. Seats tilted out of the way, vacuum under and behind them, then hot water extraction through the carpet and fabric. Steam does the vents and switchgear. Leather is cleaned and fed with a pH-appropriate conditioner rather than a shiny dressing.

Finish. Glass, trim and shuts, then protection: a sealant, or a step up to a coating.

A $150 ‘full detail’ skips decontamination and claying, because those stages are slow and invisible in photographs. Washing a contaminated car and then machine polishing it grinds that contamination across the panel, which is how cars come back from cheap details with more swirls than they went in with.

That damage is not cosmetic in the trivial sense. Correcting it later means removing clear coat, and clear coat is finite. The cheap detail costs you the expensive one.

A car that does school runs collects a specific kind of mess. Crumbs in the seat rails, sunscreen on the door cards, drink bottles that leaked into the carpet and dried, and the mystery stickiness on every surface below waist height.

Extraction matters more here than on any other car. A dried spill is in the carpet backing, not on the surface, and hot water pulled back through the pile is the only thing that gets it out.

Dog hair weaves into carpet and cloth seats and a vacuum alone will not shift it. It takes rubber brushes, compressed air and patience, and it adds real time to an interior, which is why we ask when you book.

The hair is the visible part. Dander and the oils off a wet dog get into the fabric and are what the car actually smells of. Extraction deals with that where a vacuum only deals with the hair.

If the dog rides in the boot, say so. The boot carpet and the plastic trim around it usually need the same treatment as the cabin, and a rubber boot liner afterwards makes the next clean a five minute job.

One big detail followed by a year of neglect is the expensive way to run a car. A full detail sets the baseline, then a lighter maintenance visit every month or two keeps it there for far less money and far less clear coat.

A maintenance detail is a safe wash, the wheels, a quick interior and a top-up of whatever protection is on the paint. No claying, no polishing, because a car kept up to date does not need them.
