‘Full detail’ is not a standard. One operator means a wash and a vacuum, another means a day’s work, and the price gap between them is not a rip-off on one side, it is a different job. Here is the job we mean.

Exterior. Pre-rinse and foam to lift loose grit before anything touches the paint. Contact wash with clean media and two buckets. Chemical decontamination for embedded iron fallout and tar, which is the orange bleeding you see on light-coloured cars and which no wash removes. Then a clay stage for whatever is still bonded to the clear coat.

Wheels and arches. Faces, barrels and the inside of the arches, done with their own brushes, mitts and buckets. Brake dust is abrasive and it stays on the wheel side of the job.

Interior. Full vacuum including under seats and rails, hot water extraction for carpets and fabric, steam for vents and switchgear, leather cleaned and conditioned with pH-appropriate product.

Finish. Glass inside and out, trim dressed, door shuts wiped, and then protection on the paint. A sealant by default, or a coating if the car is worth the step up.

New does not mean perfect. Transport film residue, dealer wash swirls and light marring are extremely common on delivery, and dark colours show all of it.

The best time to protect paint is before the first wash, while it has not yet accumulated damage. That means less correction, less clear coat removed, and the coating goes onto the best surface the car will ever have.

Dealer paint protection packages are frequently a sealant applied over that delivery damage in an afternoon, which locks it in.

A detail is only as good as the washing that follows it. Automatic car washes with spinning brushes will put swirls straight back into freshly corrected paint, and so will a dirty mitt and a single bucket.

Two buckets with grit guards or a proper touchless pre-wash. pH-neutral shampoo. Clean plush microfibre for drying. Deal with bird droppings and fuel spills promptly, because protection resists etching without making it impossible.

Leather seats rarely wear out. They get dirty, the dirt gets rubbed into the grain by denim and body heat, and the seat goes from cream to grey along the bolster and the base. Most of what looks like wear is grime.

A proper leather clean uses a pH-balanced cleaner and a soft brush to lift that out of the grain, then a conditioner that feeds the hide rather than coating it in silicone shine. The seat should end up matte and soft, not glossy.

Where the top coat has genuinely cracked or worn through, cleaning will show it more clearly, not hide it. That is a repair, and we will say so.

These three do more damage to paint in a Sydney summer than anything else. Bird droppings are acidic and etch into the clear coat within a day in the heat. Sap bonds hard. Water spots from a sprinkler or a hot bonnet in the rain leave mineral deposits that turn into etching over time.

A detail removes the deposit, and light etching often polishes out. Deep etching that has gone into the clear coat is a paint correction job, and sometimes the honest answer is that the mark will fade but not vanish.

Protection is the real fix. A sealant or coating gives you the hours you need to get the dropping off before it bites, which on a car parked under a tree is the difference between a wash and a polish.
