Paint correction in Campsie

Every swirl and scratch is a groove in the clear coat. To make it vanish you can fill the groove or you can bring the surface around it down until the groove is gone. Those are the only two options and they are not the same job.

Glazes and filler polishes take the first route. The car looks corrected when it leaves and it looks like it did before after a few washes, because the filler has gone and the grooves were always there. Very cheap correction is nearly always this.

Real correction takes the second route. A machine polisher and an abrasive compound level the clear coat, taking away a few microns until the surface sits at the bottom of the defect. There is nothing to wash out because nothing was added.

That is why corrected paint looks like a different colour rather than just shinier. A flat surface reflects light as a clean image; a swirled one scatters it. Black paint goes from grey to black, and it is the single most dramatic change we can make to a car.

Washing, almost entirely. Automatic car washes with spinning brushes are the worst offender, because those brushes carry grit from every car that went through before yours. A dirty wash mitt, a single bucket, or drying with the wrong towel will all do it more slowly.

They are worst on dark colours, not because dark paint scratches more easily but because the contrast between scratch and surrounding paint is far higher. The same swirls on silver are nearly invisible.

New cars arrive with them too, from transport and dealer lot preparation. Very few leave a dealership genuinely defect-free.

Not every corrected car needs a coating afterwards. If the car is being sold, a sealant over the corrected paint is enough to carry it through the photos and the inspection, and spending on a coating for the next owner rarely comes back.

A sealant lasts months rather than years and it is far cheaper. It is the honest recommendation for a pre-sale correction, a lease return, or a car you are not planning to keep long.

For a keeper, the sum flips. Correction is the expensive part and the coating is what protects it from being needed again, so on a car you will have for years, coating the corrected paint is the sensible finish.

Older cars often carry single-stage paint with no separate clear coat. It corrects, but the colour comes off on the pad and the approach is gentler, because there is no clear layer to work in. It is a job we enjoy and one to talk through first.

Resprayed panels show up on the depth gauge as far thicker than their neighbours, and they behave differently under the machine. Fresh respray needs time to fully cure before it is polished, and orange peel in a respray is a wet sanding job rather than a polishing one.

None of this rules a car out. It rules out doing it blind, which is why the measurement stage exists.

Two things get corrected alongside the paint on most cars. Yellowed headlights are wet sanded through grades, machine polished back to clear and then sealed against UV, because the original coating failing is what caused the haze. Both sides is $120.

Piano black trim, the glossy plastic around the console and on the pillars of many newer cars, scratches if you look at it and shows every swirl. It corrects like paint, gently, and it is the small job that makes a corrected car look finished.

Both are worth adding while the car is with us, because the machines, the compounds and the light are already set up.
