‘Full detail’ is not a standard. One operator means a wash and a vacuum, another means a day’s work, and the price gap between them is not a rip-off on one side, it is a different job. Here is the job we mean.

Exterior. The car is pre-rinsed and foamed so loose grit lifts off before a mitt goes near it. The contact wash uses clean media and two buckets. Then chemical decontamination pulls out iron fallout and tar, the bonded stuff a wash leaves behind that bleeds orange on white paint, and a clay stage takes whatever is still stuck to the clear coat.

Wheels and arches. Faces, barrels and arches, with separate equipment from the paintwork so brake dust never crosses over.

Interior. Full vacuum including under seats and rails, hot water extraction for carpets and fabric, steam for vents and switchgear, leather cleaned and conditioned with pH-appropriate product.

Finish. The last hour goes on glass, trim and the door shuts, then the paint is protected. That is a sealant for most cars, or a ceramic coating where you want it to last.

Interiors carry more of the day-to-day than paint does, and they are where a car most obviously feels its age. Scuffed plastics, gloss where hands land, carpets that never recovered from one spill.

The work is in the seams, rails and vents, not the surfaces you can see, which is why a proper interior takes most of a day. Hot water extraction lifts staining out of the pile instead of moving it around, and it is the stage that separates a detail from a vacuum.

Odour almost always has a source: a spill that reached the carpet underlay, a damp cabin filter, or microbial growth in the air conditioning. We find it and treat it. Spraying scent over a smell does nothing.

The make, model and colour, and a rough sense of the condition. Photos taken outside in daylight get you a closer answer than any description, because swirls and etching simply do not show up under a garage light.

Black, dark grey and deep blue show swirls and every fine scratch, so on a dark car the wash method and the polishing decide the result. Get the wash wrong and the detail undoes itself.

White, silver and light colours hide swirls but show contamination. The orange specks on a white bonnet are iron fallout, and the tar behind the wheels stands out against light paint in a way it never does on black. Decontamination is the stage that transforms a light car.

So the same detail puts its hours in different places. On a dark car that is the polish and the drying technique. On a light car it is the chemical stages and the clay. Neither is the cheaper job, they are just different jobs.

A work vehicle is a tougher detail than a family car and it is usually further gone. Concrete splash on the sills, silicone smeared on a door handle, dust through every vent and a cab that has eaten lunch in it for three years.

Some of that comes off with the right chemistry and some of it does not. Set concrete on paint usually needs more than a detail, and we will tell you which is which rather than promise the lot.
