Ceramic coating in Riverwood

A ceramic coating is clear, and it hardens over whatever the paint looks like on the day. Put it over swirls and the swirls stay, locked under a layer that lasts years. That is the most common failure in coating work and the reason a cheap coating quote is cheap: the preparation has been left out.

The order of work is fixed. Paint depth readings and an assessment. Iron and tar removers, then clay, to get the surface genuinely clean. Machine correction to remove the defects. A panel wipe on every surface to strip polishing oils. Then, and only then, the coating.

The panel wipe is easy to skip and expensive to have skipped. Polishing leaves oils on the surface, and a coating applied over them bonds to the oil, not the paint. That is the usual explanation when a coating fails in months while the same product on the next car goes for years.

Applying the coating itself is the quick part. Most of the hours in a coating job are in what happens before the bottle is opened.

The strongest coatings are not sold retail. Manufacturers release them only to installers they have trained and assessed, and the reason is practical rather than promotional.

A coating that cures to serious hardness is unforgiving. Applied unevenly, or over paint that was not properly prepared, it does not simply underperform. It locks the error in for years, and removing a failed coating is its own expensive job on top of the one you already paid for.

It also means the longest guarantees exist at all. Seven and ten year terms are only issued through authorised applicators, whoever else applies the product.

Long guarantees come with obligations, and it is better to know them before you choose a product than at year three.

Most long-term cover requires annual inspections by an approved applicator, usually within a defined window around the anniversary. Miss it and the cover lapses.

System X registers the warranty in the owner’s name and states it cannot be transferred to a new owner, so it adds nothing to a resale.

None of that makes them bad products. It means the right choice depends on whether you will genuinely bring the car back once a year. If you know you will not, a shorter product you are not relying on is the better spend.

The best time to coat a car is before its first wash. Not because a new car needs more protection, but because it needs less correction.

Every wash puts a small amount of marring into the clear coat. A car coated at delivery has almost none, so the correction is light, often single stage. Less correction means less clear coat removed, and clear coat is finite.

Do the same job three years later and you are paying for a full correction as well as the coating, on paint with less thickness left to work with.

New does not mean perfect, though. Transport contamination and dealer lot washing leave marring on most deliveries, and coating over it seals it in.

A car with no garage takes the worst of everything: bird droppings, tree sap, sprinklers, sun all day and the dew every morning. That is the car a coating does the most for, because it turns each of those into a wash instead of a polish.

The coating resists the acids in bird droppings and gives you time to get them off before they etch. It sheds water so dew and sprinkler spots dry off without leaving mineral rings. And it takes the UV that would otherwise be oxidising the clear coat.

It is not armour. A dropping left for a week in January will still mark a coated car. The difference is that a coated car gives you days, and an uncoated one gives you hours.
