Paint correction in Bankstown

A scratch is a valley in the clear coat. There are only two ways to make it disappear: fill the valley, or lower the surrounding surface until it is level with the bottom of it.

The filling approach is what a glaze does. It is genuinely convincing on the day, and it lasts a handful of washes. If a correction quote is far below the others, this is usually why: nothing has been removed.

We do the second thing. An abrasive compound on a machine polisher removes a tiny, measured layer of clear coat until the surface is flat again. The scratch has not been covered. The paint around it has been brought down to its level, and it is gone.

The colour change afterwards is the giveaway that it worked. Light reflects off a level surface as a sharp image instead of a haze, so a black car that looked grey in the sun looks black again. On dark paint people struggle to believe it is the same car.

Stages are polishing passes, and each one is more labour.

Single stage is one step. It removes lighter marring and lifts gloss considerably, and it suits well-kept or newer paint.

Two stage adds a cutting step to remove defects and then a refining step to bring clarity back. It removes the large majority of defects and is the usual recommendation before any coating.

Three stage is for show cars, dark paint held to a very high standard, or heavily neglected finishes. The time rises steeply for a difference most people would struggle to see in daylight.

The refining step matters more than expected. Cutting alone leaves its own fine haze, which is why a job that stops after the cut looks impressive under fluorescent light and disappointing in the sun.

Being straight about this is worth more than a sales pitch.

A scratch through the clear coat into the colour or primer cannot be polished out. There is nothing left to level. Chasing it means removing clear coat that is protecting the paint, and past a point you burn through and the panel needs respraying.

The test: run a fingernail across it. If your nail glides over, there is a good chance it corrects. If it catches, it needs paint rather than polish.

Cracked or flaking clear coat, usually on a roof or bonnet, is clear coat failure and cannot be polished either. That panel needs respraying.

One hundred percent correction is rarely the goal and often the wrong one. We would rather agree on ninety percent that is safe than promise a hundred that is not.

Black is the colour people most want corrected and the one that gives the least room to hide anything. Every fine mark shows, and the compound haze that a silver car would never reveal is plainly visible on black in the sun.

It also tends to be soft, especially on Japanese and Korean cars, which means it corrects easily and marks just as easily. The refining stage on black takes as long as the cutting stage, and skipping it is why so much corrected black paint looks flat in daylight.

If your car is black, plan for two stages and a coating afterwards. Anything less on a daily driver is a result you will be paying for again in a year.

A good share of the correction we do is repairing an earlier job. Holograms, the wavy rainbow marks you see on a black car in the sun, are rotary polisher trails from a cut that was never refined. Buffer burn on edges is where a machine was held too long in one place.

Holograms come out. They are a fine defect and a proper refining stage removes them. Burn-through to primer does not, and neither does the paint thickness that the previous job used up, which is why we read the paint before agreeing to anything.

If a dealer’s paint protection package left the car looking worse than it arrived, this is the usual reason and it is usually fixable.
