A dash cam that runs off the cigarette lighter is a compromise from the first day. The lead drapes down the windscreen, the socket is gone, and the camera goes dark when the key comes out, so it sees nothing of the car park.

Hardwiring takes power from the fuse box instead. We use the correct fuse tap and an inline fuse, run the cable up the A-pillar and behind the headlining, and tuck it out of sight. Done properly, the only visible part is the camera itself.

Pillar trim is not just clipped on. On a modern car it is part of the curtain airbag’s path, and it has to be released the right way and reseated properly. That is careful trim work we do constantly on detailing jobs, and it is the part a rushed installer gets wrong.

Hardwiring is also what makes parking mode possible at all, because the camera needs a permanent live feed to monitor the car while the ignition is off.

European, prestige and recent vehicles need more care, not less. Fuse boxes are buried, trim is tighter and less forgiving, and the electrical architecture is less tolerant of a fuse tap installed in the wrong circuit.

Electric vehicles are different again. The 12 volt system behaves differently from a combustion car and parking mode needs setting up with that in mind.

Footage settles disputes. In an at-fault argument where it is one account against another, video of the moments before impact is usually the end of the conversation.

Older cars are simpler and harder at the same time. The fuse box is often easy to get at and the trim comes off without a fight, but the fuse layout is not always documented and there may be no obvious circuit that is live only with the ignition.

We test with a meter rather than guess, find the right ignition-switched and constant-live circuits, and tap them properly. On a car with a glass-fuse box the tap is different again.

An older car is also more likely to have a tired battery, which matters for parking mode. We check it, and if the battery is marginal we will say so before setting a cutoff that leaves you stranded.
