A ceramic coating is clear, and it hardens over whatever the paint looks like on the day. Put it over swirls and the swirls stay, locked under a layer that lasts years. That is the most common failure in coating work and the reason a cheap coating quote is cheap: the preparation has been left out.

Nothing about the sequence is negotiable. Measure the paint. Decontaminate it chemically and with clay. Correct it by machine. Wipe every panel down with a solvent to lift the polishing oils. Coat last, when there is nothing between the product and bare, level paint.

That solvent wipe is where a lot of coating failures start. If polishing residue is left on the panel the coating sits on it rather than on the paint, and it lets go early. Same product, same installer, different result, and the difference is a step that takes twenty minutes.

Applying the coating itself is the quick part. Most of the hours in a coating job are in what happens before the bottle is opened.

The best time to coat a car is before its first wash. Not because a new car needs more protection, but because it needs less correction.

Every wash puts a small amount of marring into the clear coat. A car coated at delivery has almost none, so the correction is light, often single stage. Less correction means less clear coat removed, and clear coat is finite.

Do the same job three years later and you are paying for a full correction as well as the coating, on paint with less thickness left to work with.

New does not mean perfect, though. Transport contamination and dealer lot washing leave marring on most deliveries, and coating over it seals it in.

A coating maintained with two buckets and pH-neutral shampoo will substantially outlast the same coating run through automatic brush washes. The washing does more to determine real-world lifespan than the product does.

Those brushes carry grit from every car before yours. A handful of visits will put swirls back into freshly corrected paint, under the coating, where they are now sealed.

Avoid wash-and-wax shampoos too. They contain fillers designed to sit on top of paint, which on a coated car simply dulls the surface you paid for.

A coating is touch dry in hours and fully cured over a week or two, and how it is treated in that window matters. Keep it dry if you can, keep it out from under trees, and do not wash it.

Water spots and bird droppings in the first days should be lifted gently with a detail spray and a soft microfibre, not rubbed. No car cover, because a cover on a curing coating can mark it.

After that the first wash is a normal two-bucket wash and the coating is simply part of the car. We will tell you when the car is handed back exactly what to avoid and for how long.
