Dash cam installation in Punchbowl

A dash cam is only as useful as its installation. Run it off the cigarette lighter and you get a cable dangling from the mirror, a socket you cannot use for anything else, and a camera that switches off the moment you turn the key.

Hardwiring takes power from the fuse box instead. We use the correct fuse tap and an inline fuse, run the cable up the A-pillar and behind the headlining, and tuck it out of sight. Done properly, the only visible part is the camera itself.

It is the same careful trim removal we do for detailing work, which matters more than it sounds. Pillar trim on a modern car sits over curtain airbags, and clips break if they are levered rather than released.

Hardwiring is also what makes parking mode possible at all, because the camera needs a permanent live feed to monitor the car while the ignition is off.

The camera, if you have already bought one, or a conversation about what suits if you have not. The make, model and year of the car, because that determines fuse box access and trim.

Tell us whether you want parking mode. It changes the wiring, and it is far easier to do at installation than to retrofit.

If the car is a lease or a company vehicle, check whether hardwiring needs approval before we start.

If the car lives on the street in Punchbowl, parking mode is not optional. Most damage to a parked car happens with nobody around: a door opened into it, a mirror clipped, a bumper scraped by someone parallel parking. A camera that wakes on impact is the only witness you get.

For a street-parked car we set the parking mode to trigger on impact rather than on motion, because every passing pedestrian and headlight would otherwise fill the card and drain the battery for nothing.

The cutoff voltage is set around your driving. A car that does a short school run every day cannot afford the same drain as one that commutes for an hour, and a flat battery is a worse outcome than a missed clip.

Bring the camera and we will fit it, and most of the time it is fine. Three things are worth checking before you buy: that it uses a capacitor rather than a lithium battery, that a hardwire kit exists for it, and that parking mode is a real feature with a voltage cutoff rather than a line on the box.

A camera with only a cigarette lead can still be hardwired with the right adaptor, but if it has no parking mode there is nothing a hardwire can add beyond tidiness.

Newer cars have a pod behind the mirror with forward-facing cameras and sensors for lane keeping and emergency braking. The dash cam has to stay clear of it, because a lens or a cable in that sensor’s view can put a warning on the dash or degrade the system.

The right position is high on the glass, inside the swept area of the wiper, beside or below the pod rather than on it. On a car with a large pod that is a narrower target than it sounds, and it is one reason a quick stick-on install ends up low on the glass filming the bonnet.
