Ceramic coating in Earlwood

A ceramic coating is clear, and it hardens over whatever the paint looks like on the day. Put it over swirls and the swirls stay, locked under a layer that lasts years. That is the most common failure in coating work and the reason a cheap coating quote is cheap: the preparation has been left out.

The order of work is fixed. Paint depth readings and an assessment. Iron and tar removers, then clay, to get the surface genuinely clean. Machine correction to remove the defects. A panel wipe on every surface to strip polishing oils. Then, and only then, the coating.

The panel wipe is easy to skip and expensive to have skipped. Polishing leaves oils on the surface, and a coating applied over them bonds to the oil, not the paint. That is the usual explanation when a coating fails in months while the same product on the next car goes for years.

Applying the coating itself is the quick part. Most of the hours in a coating job are in what happens before the bottle is opened.

It makes the car dramatically easier to keep clean. Dirt struggles to key into the surface, water sheets off rather than clinging, and washing takes roughly half the time. That matters more than the gloss, because easier washing means fewer swirls going back in.

It adds real depth on corrected paint, resists UV, oxidation, bird droppings, insect acids and road film, and holds that behaviour for years rather than weeks.

It will not stop a stone chip. A coating is measured in microns and handles chemical attack, not physical impact. It will not survive automatic brush washes, and it does not make the car self-cleaning. Anyone claiming otherwise is overselling.

Both are silica chemistry. A graphene coating is the same base with graphene oxide added, which changes how the cured layer behaves rather than replacing the technology.

Graphene resists water spotting better and spreads heat across the panel instead of letting it concentrate. On a dark car parked outside through a Sydney summer, that is the difference you notice day to day.

Ceramic holds a small edge on outright gloss depth and has a longer real-world track record. On a garaged car kept for a decade, that counts.

The gap between the two is smaller than the gap between a well-prepared coating and a badly prepared one.

A coating maintained with two buckets and pH-neutral shampoo will substantially outlast the same coating run through automatic brush washes. The washing does more to determine real-world lifespan than the product does.

Those brushes carry grit from every car before yours. A handful of visits will put swirls back into freshly corrected paint, under the coating, where they are now sealed.

Avoid wash-and-wax shampoos too. They contain fillers designed to sit on top of paint, which on a coated car simply dulls the surface you paid for.
